The Water Safety Patrol operates on Lake Michigan and on navigable inland rivers and lakes throughout Racine County, ensuring the safety of our waters for all those who live, work, and recreate in Racine County. Over half of Racine County by area is surface water, approximately 460 square miles, with 14.8 miles of Great Lakes shoreline to protect. Racine County is home to some of the best beaches in Wisconsin, and annually hosts over 300,000 beach-going visitors. The Sheriff’s Office Water Patrol ensures the security of Racine County beaches and waterfront facilities, helping to make Racine County’s waterfront a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
Regionally, the Sheriff’s Office is part of the Area Maritime Security Plan, and together with the County is an active member of the Southeast Wisconsin Area Maritime Security Committee. The Sheriff’s Office Water Safety Patrol is an integral part of the layered security force responsible for securing ports and harbors from the Wisconsin/Illinois border to Sheboygan.
The Water Safety Patrol operates continuously from April 1st until mid-November, increasing its staffing during the peak summer boating season. Patrol missions include special enforcement, water safety patrols, dive team and rescue operations, as well as criminal investigations. Partial funding of up to 17% of Water Safety Patrol costs are reimbursed through a partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
