General Information
- There is no required fee.
- The Adopt-a-Highway program is organized on a calendar-year basis.
- Highway segments are assigned first-come-first-served basis.
- However, if all positions are filled or if the number of applications received exceeds our funding for signs and supplies, your group may be placed on a waiting list.
- When your application is approved and returned your group will be assigned a highway segment. In addition to the permit to work on the highway right-of-way you will receive further instructions.
- Each qualified group takes responsibility for litter control on a segment of County highway.
- The group picks up litter on this segment at least 3 times per year between April 1 and November 1.
- Any group organized for some special purpose or task may be a sponsor - except partisan or political groups.
- Each group must provide one adult supervisor for every 5-6 workers.
- All workers must be at least 11 years of age or in 6th grade.
- No other persons should be on the work site.
- If you choose, a sign announcing to vehicles your group's litter control sponsorship may be installed.
- Groups do not work in dangerous areas such as medians, bridges or steep slopes.
- This program is carried out with an emphasis on safety. It is important to be very careful when working along the road.
- A portable "person working" sign provided by Racine County must be used at both ends of your highway segment.
- Each worker is required to wear a high visibility safety vest while working and must review a safety video (available online at WI DOT).
- Safety meetings must be held by the group at the beginning of each clean-up day.
