    Dangers of Cliff Jumping

Quarry Lake Park offers natural beauty and recreational opportunities for our community, but it is crucial to adhere to safety guidelines to protect yourself and others. Specifically, cliff jumping is strictly prohibited and extremely dangerous. Here’s why:

    • Impact with Water at High Speeds: When you jump from the cliffs around Quarry Lake, you are entering the water at dangerously high speeds. For instance, a jump from 20 feet can result in hitting the water at speeds of 25 mph, causing impact forces similar to colliding with a concrete wall. This can result in severe injuries, including spinal compression, broken bones, and concussions.
    • Cold Water Shock: The park's waters can be deceptively cold, and sudden immersion can trigger a cold water shock response. This includes an involuntary gasp followed by uncontrollable hyperventilation, which can lead to drowning. Cold water shock also causes significant cardiovascular stress, potentially leading to a heart attack, even in the young and healthy. Water temperatures below 59°F are considered dangerously cold and can affect your ability to move and breathe within seconds.
    • Submerged Objects and Terrain: The water in Quarry Lake contains submerged objects and uneven terrain that pose additional risks. Jumpers risk colliding with these hidden hazards, which can cause traumatic injuries or entrapment under water. Moreover, water depths can vary due to environmental factors, and what may appear safe can be misleadingly shallow or change with the tides.

For your safety and the safety of others, please observe all posted signs and do not trespass or ignore prohibitions against cliff jumping. By following these guidelines, we can ensure Quarry Lake Park remains a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.
